Useful tips for cleaning glass showcases without scratching

It’s natural to want your windows (old or new) to look as great as the day they were installed. Clean windows can bring more light into your home and allow you to experience your surroundings more. But it can be prudent to discover the proper way to clean your windows so that scratch problems can be avoided. Here are some tips on how to clean your windows like a pro.

4 steps to scratch-free glass cleaning

  1.  Avoid using glass cleaners made with ammonia or alcohol. They may give the window a good shine at first glance, but end up leaving streaks and scratches that attract dust and dirt. If you have a particularly tough stain, you can start the cleaning process by using a solvent like acetone, or by applying rubbing alcohol to a clean cloth and wiping directly on the area. Clean it and then proceed to clean the window as you normally would.
  2. No matter how stubborn some germ stains are, never use a razor or any other sharp tool to remove them. This can cause permanent scratches and make your windows more vulnerable to future breakage.
  3. Use a soft, gentle cloth to clean. A microfiber cloth is ideal, but a soft, clean paper towel will also work. Move in multiple directions to avoid streaks.
  4. If you find that you still have streaks after cleaning the window, simply rinse with clean water to help remove any remaining cleaner.

Which types of window cleaners to use?

  1.  If you are going to buy a cleaning product, buy  a cleaning product  from a brand you trust.
  2. You can also use a pre-mixed vinegar solution, or even make your own window cleaner with the help of our easy little tutorial below.

Homemade cleaning solution for cleaning glass

One of our favorite homemade cleaners is a simple solution made with distilled vinegar, otherwise known as white vinegar. This is an easy product to find (if you don’t already have it at home). Its acidic formulation works effectively to remove stubborn stains that can build up on your windows and other glass surfaces. Follow these simple steps to make your own homemade cleaner:

  1. Pour 1 part distilled vinegar and 10 parts warm water into a spray bottle.
  2. Wipe the window with a soft, clean, microfiber cloth or paper towel to remove dust before spraying the solution, then spray the solution over the entire surface.
  3. Dampen your soft cloth with the vinegar solution and treat the dirty, stained glass. Use a generous amount of cleaner on a cloth or paper towel as needed, but avoid using cleaners on wood, fiberglass or vinyl frames as this can cause discoloration.
  4. Use a second clean cloth to dry your window as thoroughly as possible. You’ll want to do this quickly after cleaning to avoid streaks, so if you have multiple windows to clean, it’s best to do them separately instead of spraying them all at once.
  5. If the strips remain after cleaning, rinse with clean water.

Cleaning larger glasses with vinegar

  1. If your windows are too large for a spray bottle and cloth to clean, you can mix a little more solution in the grinder, using about one part vinegar to ten parts water.
  2. Dip the sponge into the bucket and wet the window with the solution. You have to do it as fast as possible to avoid streaks.
  3. With a wet polisher, remove the solution from the windows by wiping it from the top of the window down. Clean the wiper blade after each use to avoid drips.

Windows without stripes look bright and clean. After you’ve cleaned all the glass in your house, it’s time to clean the rest of the windows. Dirt and grime can build up on frames, causing stains and damage. It can get into clutches or other working parts and cause your window to jam or stop working altogether.

Clean all other parts of the window to make sure they not only look great, but also work properly. This is just part of good window care and maintenance. And if you are not confident in your cleaning skills, you can always call us and get the perfect service.
