The best ways to organize and clean the house
The biggest mistake people make is cleaning room by room (this is called “zone cleaning”) It’s too slow! “You can clean your kitchen in four hours, or clean the whole house from start to finish in four hours,” said Lisa Romero, owner of one successful cleaning company. “Many people focus on one space—say, doing a super job cleaning the counters—and never touch the stove, let alone in the next room. In fact, rearranging and moving things around is quick and efficient. “
General cleaning guide
Recommended plan of attack? Top to bottom, left to right. “I always start [in the upstairs bathroom],” says Romero. “Good place to leave supplies.”
For each task, start at the highest point in the room (if dusting, then the high shelves) and move from left to right across the room. This way, you won’t miss anything and you won’t have to dust the already cleaned lower shelves again.
Dust each room, the top of all furniture, the underside of shelves and all railings, as well as picture frames, TV screens and souvenirs. “If possible, dust dry, because getting wet makes the process more difficult,” says Romero. To remove stains, dampen a microfiber cloth with warm water.
Cleaning pro tip: Look up. “People don’t dust the top of the furniture, and that’s where all the dust collects and then falls down,” says Romero.
Step 2: Clean the upholstery fabrics
Go around the house and make and make the beds; Arrange any cushions or furniture covers. If necessary, vacuum the furniture.
Step 3: Clean the mirrors and glass
Clean mirrors and windows throughout the house.
Cleaning Pro Tip: Using one wet and one dry microfiber cloth won’t leave streaks.
Clean all surfaces throughout the home, disinfecting as needed.
Pro cleaning tip: Be sure to wipe down stains on places like doorknobs, light switches, TV remotes, and phones. “These are places that people forget about, and they really have germs on them,” Payne says.
Step 5: Tidy up the kitchen and bathroom
Go around and spray the cleaner on tubs, sinks and toilets. Go back and brush it. Then, in the kitchen, wipe down the inside of the microwave and the doors of drawers and cupboards.
Clean the bathroom and kitchen floors and any other floors that need it.
Pro cleaning tip: “I always clean the bathroom floor on my hands and knees with a microfiber cloth and mop,” says Romero. “That way I know I’ve reached every nook and cranny, even behind the toilet, and that they’re 100% clean.
Step 7: Cleaning the house with a vacuum cleaner
“I vacuum the bedroom, the stairs, the living room, and the hallway,” says Romero.
Pro Cleaning Tips: It’s not critical to vacuum every inch. Just keep moving. You will meet the missed places next week.
